Buckeye Local Schools follow the Operating Standards for Gifted Education as set forth by the Ohio Department of Education.
Who is a “Gifted Student” in Ohio?
The state of Ohio defines a gifted student as one who “performs or shows potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment and who are identified under division (A), (B), (C), or (D) of section 3324.03 of Ohio Revised Code. Students can be identified as gifted in the areas of superior cognitive ability (general intelligence), specific academic ability (reading, math, social studies, and/or science), creative thinking ability, and visual-performing arts ability.

The Buckeye Local School District recognizes the importance of providing all students with an appropriately rigorous curriculum. In order to do this, the district must first determine the academic levels of our students per nationally-normed assessments. The following whole-grade assessments are administered to accomplish this goal and also to identify gifted and potentially gifted students in the areas of superior cognitive ability, mathematics, reading, science and social studies:
Grade 2 the Core Iowa Assessment and CogAT
Grade 4 the Complete Iowa Assessment and CogAT are administered.
